what web development is,
and what web design is

Web design decides how a page looks and where the eye goes. Web development decides whether it loads fast, works on every device, can be read by Google, and whether you can still have it changed in three years. The two belong together but often get done by different people. With us the same person does both, so the design does not fall apart when it gets built.

only what is needed

CODE // HANDARBEIT

We build without page builders and without builder add-ons. The difference does not show on day one, it shows after two years: a hand-built site is still fast then, because it carries no code nobody uses.

load time is a number

MESSEN STATT MEINEN

Fast is not a feeling, it is a measurement on real visitors. We check the three values Google uses for it and do not ship while they are not in the green. On a phone, not on a developer machine.

you can switch at any time

ÜBERGABE // EIGENTUM

You get the complete code, all credentials and a description of how the thing is built. Any other developer can continue from that. It is the most important difference to a page builder, from which you cannot take the appearance with you.

when a page builder
is the right choice

Often. If a site has to stand within two days, the budget is small and little will change over the coming years, a page builder is the sensible answer, and we say so. Hand-built pays off as soon as the site is meant to bring inquiries, as soon as it grows, or as soon as you want to stay independent. This table helps with the decision, even if you end up not building with us.

Page builder versus hand-built
How fast does a first version stand?Page builderIn days. That is the real advantage and the reason page builders exist.Hand-builtIn weeks, because concept and copy get settled first.
What happens to load time?Page builderEvery block brings its own code, including the parts your page does not need. That adds up with every extension.Hand-builtOnly what is actually used. That is why the site stays fast after two years too.
What if something is not provided for?Page builderThen it cannot be done, or it gets forced with an add-on that slows the site down further.Hand-builtThen it gets built. The effort is manageable, because no system works against it.
Can you change provider?Page builderUsually not without rebuilding. Content can be exported, the appearance cannot.Hand-builtYes. You get the code and can take it to any other developer.
What does it cost over five years?Page builderLow entry, but monthly fees and often a rebuild as soon as something bigger comes up.Hand-builtHigher entry, then only hosting and maintenance. The maths usually flips in the second or third year.

Qualitative comparison of two approaches, without naming providers

what it costs,
and why without an hourly rate

A website starts at 2,500€ for a well-considered one-pager, sits at 4,500€ for the usual scope of five to ten pages and at 7,500€ when multiple languages or integration with existing systems come into play. An application going beyond a website starts at 5,000€.

We deliberately do not name an hourly rate. An open hourly rate shifts the entire risk onto you, because you only know what it cost at the end. With a fixed price the risk sits with us, and that is right, because we can judge better how long something takes.

If you do not need a website but an application with users, permissions and a database, that is on our page about web app development. And if it is about design rather than build, then web design.

Your contact

bernhard müllauer

I write the quote, I design, I build. You do not get an account manager standing between you and the work, you talk to the same person from the first question until after launch.

If something does not make sense, I say so, even when that makes the project smaller. In the long run that is more pleasant for both sides. If you have technical questions, in Vienna you talk to me directly and not to a project manager.

The invisible part

what nobody sees,
but everybody notices

Most of the development work cannot be seen on the finished page. Images delivered at the right size. Fonts that do not load late and make the text jump. A heading structure a screen reader understands. Forms operable by keyboard.

Those points decide whether a page ranks on Google and whether it meets the accessibility act. They cost little while building and are expensive afterwards, because they sit in the structure and not on the surface. So we do them from the start instead of offering them as an extra line item.

what should
get built

Describe the plan briefly. If a site or a design already exists, send the address along and we can answer more concretely.

Yes, completely, plus all credentials and a description of how the site is built. Any other developer can continue from that. It is the most important practical difference to a page builder, from which you cannot take the appearance with you.

Yes. If you have a finished design, whether from an agency or in-house, we build it. We name the price after seeing the design, because it depends heavily on how clean and complete it is. What we do say beforehand: whether the design is technically buildable the way it was intended.
